WEBINAR: The Impact of Law on the Architect in Practice (22 July 2020)
Almost 50 attendees participated in SCL(S)'s webinar "The Impact of Law on the Architect in Practice" on 22 July 2020.
The speakers, architect Catherine Loke (Lander Loke Architects) and lawyer Edwin Lee (Eldan Law), offerred perspectives from architectural practice and legal standpoints respectively, including through the cases of:
- Wei Siang Design Construction Pte Ltd v Euro Assets Holding (S) Pte Ltd [2018] SGHC 182; and
- Freeborn & Anor v Marcal (t/a Dan Marcal Architects) [2019] EWHC 454 (TCC).
The talks stirred the interest and imagination of the attendees, as evidenced by a full and vibrant Q&A session. Thankfully, by the end of the webinar, the speakers had alleviated any misperceptions that architects are characterised by the egotistical maniac as portrayed in Monty Python’s Architect Sketch. The talks, and especially the cited cases, clearly illustrated the synposis' claim that the Architect carries heavy obligations and responsibilities, with sobering consequences should the Architect fail to fulfil them.
