Construction Law 101 (15th Run): Sessions 1 - 4 (13, 18, 20 and 25 March 2025)
The 15th run of SCL(S) Construction Law 101 course was held over four evenings on 13, 18, 20 and 25 March 2025.
Construction contracts are often lengthy, complex, and can be daunting for those unfamiliar with them. Adding to the challenge, these contracts operate alongside Singapore's Security of Payments legislation. To make construction law more accessible, the 101 course was created to introduce industry participants to the fundamental principles in a clear and engaging way.
This year’s teaching faculty featured Mr. Toh Chen Han, Mr. Ang Wee Jian, Mr. Chan Yong Neng, and Ms. Wynne Tay, from Pinsent Masons MPillay.
Session 1 provided a foundational overview, covering common types of construction contracts and key concepts such as variations, completion, extensions of time, and liquidated damages.
Session 2 shifted the focus to the key players involved in contract administration. It explored the legal relationships between employers and contractors, as well as the roles of subcontractors, certifiers, and other stakeholders in project delivery.
Session 3 addressed a common aspect of construction projects: claims and disputes. It delved into notice requirements under standard form contracts and examined the various forums available for dispute resolution and how they interact.
The course wrapped up with Session 4, which focused on Singapore’s security of payment adjudication framework. This session explored practical issues in adjudication and gave an overview of the adjudication process for construction disputes.
Each session concluded with a buffet dinner and casual networking, which was very well-received — not a single buffet tray was left untouched.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all participants for their enthusiasm and thoughtful contributions.
