Consultation in Progress: Exploring the Legal Intricacies of Consultants’ Duties (21 May 2025)
A huge thank you to our incredible panel and audience at our recent seminar, "Consultation in Progress: Exploring the Legal Intricacies of Consultants' Duties"!
Held on 21 May 2025, the seminar brought together a distinguished panel of experts who shared their insights on the evolving and often complex legal and professional responsibilities of consultants in construction projects. We were privileged to hear from:
🔹 Catherine Loke – Partner, Lander Loke Architects
🔹 Kua Lay-Theng – Partner, WongPartnership LLP
🔹 Johnny Tan, JP BBM PBM – Independent Arbitrator
The discussion was skilfully moderated by Justin Tan, Council Member of the Society of Construction Law (Singapore).
Highlights of the Seminar:
Ar. Catherine Loke offered valuable perspectives on the overlapping roles of the architect as designer, contract administrator and qualified person, shedding light on the multiple “hats” worn by architects—as employer’s agent, contract administrators, and qualified person—often simultaneously.
Ms. Kua Lay Theng examined the legal intricacies of consultants’ duties, including a focused analysis of the seminal case of Ser Kim Koi, which continues to shape the legal framework governing consultants’ duties and liabilities.
Ar. Johnny Tan, while fully observing the duty of confidentiality in arbitration, offered his valuable perspective as a full-time arbitrator on the common issues he has observed occurring in real disputes involving consultants’ liability.
We were delighted to see a strong turnout and engagement from professionals across the construction ecosystem—architects, lawyers, engineers, surveyors and technical experts—who contributed in the lively post-event networking session.
