SCL(S) Annual Construction Law Conference 2021: HOPE AND FEARS - the Built Environment in the Next Decade (23 September 2021)
The Annual Law Conference 2021 ran successfully. The hybrid format was used and so, participants had the option of attending in-person or virtually by Zoom. About 50 people attended in-person and 100 attended virtually.
The Guest of Honour was Minister Indranee Rajah who gave the welcome speech. She spoke on the various issues affecting the construction industry such as labour shortages and the push to combat climate change, and how the government was addressing them.
There were then 4 different sessions with panellists speaking on topics such as trends in construction law and the challenges with virtual hearings. A highlight of the Conference was a fun debate on whether the construction industry was becoming more contentious. Both sides made strong arguments with the winner being Amit Garg and Laura Changa who argued in favour of the motion. Another interesting facet of the Conference was that many of the panellists spoke via Zoom from various overseas jurisdictions such as Brazil and Dubai, allowing the Conference to retain its international flavour despite the current restrictions on travel.
The Conference was well-organized and it ran smoothly. Kudos to the organising committee for pulling off such a successful event in these challenging times!
