In early 2017, SCL(S) embarked on a new modular programme ‘Construction Expertise 101’ as an expansion and diversification from its highly successful Engineering 101 course (2010-2015) to provide basic understanding and appreciation of the key disciplines in the Singapore construction industry. This Modular programme is conducted over 5 evening sessions with the following specific disciplines covered in each of the 2 years:

Participants may choose to attend ALL 5 evening modules in 2018 at an attractive discount or one or more modules corresponding to specific disciplines (please refer to the Registration section on page 3 for pricing details).

About the Speakers:

Session 1 (8 March 2018): Project Manager – Mr. Yip Kim Seng – 2nd Vice President, Society of Project Managers
Yip Kim Seng is passionate in advancing Project Management. In SPM, he is instrumental in developing and implementing the Accreditation of Project Managers scheme. He represents SPM at the Global Alliance for the Project Professionals (GAPPS) forums and is a GAPPS board director.
25 years of his more than 30 years of career experience in the Build Environment and Construction Industry were in Project Management. He spent a large part of his career as an Architect and Project Manager with the former Public Works Department and then CPG Consultants. He led PM Link Pte Ltd as Managing Director from 2006 to 2011.
In Project Management, he successfully led and managed the development of a variety of large scale public sector projects, covering airport terminal, hospital, university and mega school campuses, conservation building, ministry HQ building and checkpoint complex. He is currently a PM Trainer and Consultant. He lectures regularly at SUSS and BCA Academy in Project Management.
 
Session 2 (13 March 2018): Civil & Structural Engineer and Geotechnical Engineer – Mr. Andrew Forsythe – Principal Engineering Geologist, Mott MacDonald & Mr Gerardo Pittaro, Mott MacDonald
Andrew joined Mott MacDonald in in 2004 and has been based in Singapore for the last eight years. He is currently Principal Engineering Geologist and leads Mott MacDonald’s Engineering Geology Team. During his thirteen years at Mott MacDonald, Andrew has worked on a broad range of projects in industries including buildings, transport, and power throughout Asia, Australasia, and Europe, primarily focusing on ground characterization and geotechnical risk for underground infrastructure and foundations.
Andrew been the geotechnical lead on a large number of projects involving tunnels and deep excavations from master-planning and prefeasibility stage to detailed design and construction supervision, with selected examples including MRT stations and tunnels in Singapore and Australia; power stations in Vietnam and Indonesia, and tall buildings in New Zealand.
 
Gerardo has had many years of international experience in civil engineering and geotechnical work. Having obtained his Bachelors of Engineering in Argentina, he went on to obtain and his Masters of Science in Italy and has now embarked on a part time PhD at the National University of Singapore. His area of research focuses on soil improvement in major infrastructure projects carried out in the centre-east area of Singapore.
Gerardo is also a geotechnical engineer at Mott MacDonald, for more than 6 years he has been involved in the design, coordination and construction support of civil engineering projects (specialising in infrastructure projects). This has also included the design of tunnels and stations for several MRT lines. Gerardo has been involved major projects in different countries, ranging from feasibility studies to final stage design. Some of his more prominent projects include the Thomson- East Line in Singapore, Line 5 extension of the Metropolitana de Sao Paolo in Brazil, Line 5 of Metro of Saint Petersburg in Russia and 52 storeys skyscraper in Auckland, New Zealand.
 
Session 3 (15 March 2018): Mechanical & Electrical Engineer – To be Confirmed

Stephen first joined Beca in 1990 as a graduate from the University of Auckland. He worked in Beca’s Auckland and Melbourne offices for eight years before relocating to Canada.
Seeking a change from consulting, Stephen took up the role of vice president of engineering for a large district energy company that produces and distributes 700 MW of cooling and heating energy to large buildings in downtown Toronto.
In 2007, Stephen rejoined Beca to work for the Building Services section in Singapore as a technical director. He specialises in the management of large commercial projects and the design of district energy systems.

Session 4 (20 March 2018): Building Surveyor – Mr. Chin Cheong, Managing Director, Chartered Building Surveyor; B.Sc.(Hons), MCABE, FRICS, MSISV, ASIArb, MRISM

Building Appraisal Pte Ltd is established by Mr Chin Cheong since 1995 and we have been appointed by clients to carry out survey & investigative work both locally and overseas including several REIT companies listed in SGX. As an experienced Chartered Building Surveyor, over the 20 years he has offered advice on many aspects of detailing and construction including condition of defects, maintenance, repairs, addition and alterations, refurbishment and restoration of proposed and existing buildings, external facade repairs, fire reinstatement works, dilapidation survey, technical due diligence survey (pre-acquisition surveys), landlord/tenant matters on repairing covenants, property damage due to construction and development works as well as acting as expert witness on building defects cases.
Mr Chin Cheong, a Chartered Building Surveyor who is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) of the United Kingdom and the local Professional Body the Singapore Institute of Surveyors and Valuers.
 
Session 5 (22 March 2018): Construction Programming Consultant – Mr. Stuart Begbie, Director, Driver Trett & Mr. Trevor Lam –  Head of Singapore, CTBH
Stuart is an experienced construction and infrastructure professional who specialises in forensic delay analysis and contractual claims dispute resolution. He has over with over 30-years’ experience in programme and project management of construction, industrial, marine, oil & gas and infrastructure projects. He has also given evidence at hearings as acting as parties’ technical representative (expert adviser) in matters relating to programming and planning.
Stuart has provided advice and has been appointed as expert witness on a range of major building and infrastructure projects across South East Asia. He is experienced in expert witness reports and exhibit preparation, mediation, analysis of delay and disruption and EOT claims. Stuart is recognised as an expert on matters of time management and control (programming) and has been appointed as an Expert Witness for major commercial buildings and construction projects. He has also co-written reports with other experts.
 
Trevor commenced his career in Australia and has worked in planning, scheduling and forensic delay analysis since 2000. His experience has been drawn from his involvement on a wide range of projects including airports, roads, rail infrastructure, mixed-use developments, hospitals, shopping centres, oil & gas plants, power plants and sporting facilities in Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, the UK and Dubai.
Trevor brings extensive experience in the provision of independent expert analysis on extensions of time, delay, disruption and acceleration. While retained for the purposes of representing contractors and owners, Trevor has been involved in preparing overall recovery strategies, preparing analyses and expert reports for various stages of litigation, acted as the expert in arbitration and mediation proceedings, provided expert delay analyses in Security of Payment Act proceedings and developed extension of time administration regimes for both contractors and owners to ensure that contractual obligations are satisfied. Trevor has been and is still currently heavily involved in the front-end delivery of live projects; planning construction works for a wide range of projects at both the tender and delivery stages of a project. He is a great believer in applying industry best practices when preparing and maintaining construction programmes, particularly having continually witnessed the common pitfalls of poor planning and record keeping and their resultant negative effects when disputes arise. Having worked closely with a range of clients and represented subcontractors, contractors and owners, Trevor has developed a wide ranging perspective on construction issues that commonly arise.
