Immediate Past Chairperson’s Message - September 2024
Dear fellow SCL (Singapore) members,
Following the conclusion of our recent Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on 29 August 2024, I am pleased to invite you to join me in welcoming the new Council for 2024-2026, now helmed by Trevor Lam!
I wish to record my thanks and appreciation to the outgoing Council Members for their invaluable contributions to the Society: Andrei Soltan, Alexis Chan, Sam Widdowson and Lee Chau Ee, who has served on the Council in various capacities including as our past Chair.
What is encouraging is that we have more people stepping forward to serve on committees. This ensures that SCL (Singapore) will continue to flourish with new energy and fresh ideas.
So much has happened in the last 2 years. I will take this opportunity to take stock.
One of our objectives was to ensure that the Society keeps its bow pointed in the right direction with respect to its objectives stated in the constitution and maintaining its relevance in the built-environment. The Strategic Leadership and Professional Development Committees have increasingly assumed a leading role in advancing education on construction law and practice. We are also honoured to be invited by the Singapore judiciary to be represented on the Supreme Court of Singapore User’s Committee for Building and Construction Matters and Singapore Institute of Commercial Court (SICC) Users’ Council.
On Thought Leadership, the SCL (Singapore) draft protocols for the use of experts’ joint statements in construction arbitration has taken shape and will be unveiled and discussed at the upcoming Annual Conference on 2 October 2024.
In line with our objective to strengthen our bonds with our reciprocal partners and foster synergy with our colleagues in the construction space, we have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Association of Women in Construction (Singapore) and renewed our reciprocal arrangement with Singapore Institute of Building Limited.
Our Annual Dinner was repeated at the lovely OSO Ristorante Restaurant, where it was held last year. We had a packed room of energetic practitioners, including those who came from overseas for the Singapore Convention Week. A note of thanks to the SCL (Singapore) Secretariat team led by June for the impeccable organisation of the event.
Finally, it remains for me to thank the Society’s membership for your support, and the privilege and honour of serving you as Chairperson the last two years. I will remain a part of the Council and look forward to working with the newly elected Council.
Moon Kua
Immediate Past Chairperson, SCL (Singapore)
